How to clean a kitchen outfit?

You work in the restaurant business and the gunshot in the kitchen has left its mark? The cleanliness of your kitchen clothing is essential for the image of your establishment. A neat professional kitchen jacket reflects the cleanliness of the restaurant and the quality of the food served. Whether it’s for a commis or a chef, discover the different materials available for a professional cook’s workwear and how to easily clean it after service.

Choosing the right material for your kitchen outfit

Whether it’s a pair of pants, a kitchen blouse or an apron, it is important to select materials that are easy to care for and adapted to gastronomy professionals. Some chefs will look for comfort and others for functionality. Before discovering the tips on how to remove stains from a kitchen garment, here are the main fabrics used in the manufacture of a quality professional work garment.

Professional kitchen jacket: The choice of materials

For cooks and restaurateurs, the smock remains the main element of a kitchen outfit. A quality textile is essential to work comfortably. It also offers a better durability for a professional workwear sometimes put to the test behind the stove.

  • 100% cotton: a timeless fabric that is both comfortable and resistant. Machine washable at high temperature, it is easy to maintain. The cotton canvas is also a good protection against burns in the kitchen.
  • The “poly”: polyester, polycotton or composition associated with Lyocell, these textiles are often used for a professional kitchen outfit without compromise. They combine comfort, durability and ease of maintenance.
  • Tencel: This natural fiber provides excellent breathability. It regulates humidity and has anti-odour properties. A great choice for chefs looking for a light and breathable kitchen coat.
  • The honeycomb textile: for cooks in perpetual motion. A professional kitchen jacket with breathable mesh inserts will ensure freedom of movement in daily routines.
  • Technical fabrics: technology on the menu for a high quality kitchen outfit! Some gowns are equipped with a “37.5” thermoregulating fabric. There are also flame retardant fabrics.

How to detach a kitchen outfit?

If the stains on your pants or kitchen coat are not too deep, you can first :

  • Rinse all stained parts of your garment (sleeves, neckline, chest, etc.) with cold water.
  • Then rub the stain with Marseille soap to form a thin “crust” without rinsing it
  • Leave it on for about 30 minutes, then soak your kitchen gear in hot water. For more efficiency, add a little white vinegar and 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • After one hour of soaking, put your kitchen garment in the machine according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

If the recipe with Marseille soap was not entirely effective, test it with a secret ingredient: terre de Sommières!
It is a natural clay powder, which in addition to being ecological, is very effective for grease, oil or vinegar stains.

Last resort for the most stubborn stains (blood, sauce, wine, etc.) If the fabric of your professional kitchen clothing allows it, an industrial wash represents a fast and effective solution.

Can you bleach a kitchen jacket?

The answer is yes…but watch out for the bleach! This product is known to whiten clothes, but your kitchen gear may wear out very quickly.
To gently whiten your professional kitchen jacket, natural solutions exist:

  • White vinegar: again! Add a glass to each machine wash of your kitchen coat (place directly in the fabric softener tray).
  • Lemon: After cutting it into quarters, be sure to wrap it in a cloth or sock and place it in the drum before starting the cycle.
  • Milk: A slightly longer, but more delicate process for maintaining your white kitchen jacket. Soak your work coat in milk for several hours, adding soda crystals.

Professional workwear: to each his own style!
